Conciergerie Accessibility

The medieval ground-floor halls are step-free; the upstairs Revolutionary tribunal rooms are not. Free wheelchair loan, audio descriptions, sign-language tours and a free companion for disabled visitors. Here's how to make use of every service the Centre des monuments nationaux offers.

The Conciergerie is partially accessible — the medieval ground-floor halls including the Salle des Gens d'Armes and Marie-Antoinette's memorial chapel are step-free, but the upstairs Revolutionary Tribunal rooms are reached only by a 17th-century staircase with no lift. The Centre des monuments nationaux offers wheelchair loan, audio descriptions and sign-language services. See our free & reduced tickets page for the companion-free policy and visitors guide for general practical info.

Facilities and services in detail

Mobility

The medieval ground-floor halls — Salle des Gens d'Armes, Salle des Gardes, kitchens and Marie-Antoinette's memorial chapel — are entirely step-free and accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. The upstairs Revolutionary Tribunal rooms are reached by a narrow 17th-century staircase with no lift, and unfortunately remain inaccessible to wheelchair users. Free wheelchair loan is available at the entrance on a first-come basis. Accessible toilets are on the ground floor near the bookshop.

Sight

The HistoPad tablet includes detailed audio descriptions of every major room, narrated in 11 languages. CMN runs quarterly touch tours where blind and partially sighted visitors explore high-quality tactile reproductions of architectural fragments alongside an experienced guide — book through the CMN accessibility department.

Hearing

Sign-language video tours in French Sign Language (LSF) are available on the HistoPad, and induction loops are installed at the ticket desk. CMN runs occasional LSF guided tours on the second Saturday of the month — check the official calendar.

Cognitive

A simplified visit guide (FALC — French facile à lire et à comprendre) is available in print at the entrance, intended for visitors with cognitive disabilities. It can also be downloaded in PDF from the official site before your visit.

Accessibility FAQ

Common questions about access at the monument

Is the monument fully wheelchair accessible?
Partially. The medieval ground-floor halls — including Marie-Antoinette's memorial chapel — are step-free. The upstairs Revolutionary Tribunal rooms are reached only by a narrow staircase with no lift and remain inaccessible to wheelchair users.
Can I reserve a wheelchair?
Yes — request one in advance via the official CMN site. The loan is free and on a first-come basis on the day.
Are companions admitted free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free of charge. The disabled visitor pays standard admission, or free if they qualify under another category.
Are there sensory-friendly hours?
CMN does not yet run formal sensory-friendly hours at the Conciergerie, but early-morning slots (09:30) are reliably the quietest of the day.
Are guide dogs allowed?
Yes. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the monument.
Is parking available for blue-badge holders?
There is no on-site parking — the Île de la Cité is largely pedestrianised. The closest blue-badge spots are on rue de la Cité (1-minute walk) or Quai aux Fleurs.
Are there quiet rooms in the monument?
No dedicated sensory rest room, but the medieval Salle des Gens d'Armes is large and rarely crowded after the 09:30 slot — visitors who need quiet often pause there.
How do I book a touch tour or LSF tour?
Touch tours run quarterly and LSF tours on the second Saturday of the month. Book directly through the CMN accessibility department on paris-conciergerie.fr, ideally a month ahead.
